The Ship and Anchor Pub, or The Ship, as it is affectionately know to its regulars, features all of the trappings of a traditional British pub. Books line the walls, the back bar is decorated with colourful soccer scarves, the telly is tuned to soccer matches and the bar is frequented by many British expats. The pub also celebrates the British New Year and St. George's Day, serves hearty pub food and features an impressive draft beer selection. But ask any regular what makes The Ship so beloved and they will likely tell you it is because of its inclusive, anything-goes atmosphere.
Marketing and promotions manager Nicola Trolez attributes the pub's success to its mixed-bag clientele. "People feel comfortable here,” she says. “You can come straight from work, or you can come ready for a night out. Everybody's welcome. It's special that people can come in and feel like they belong." Many an unlikely friendship has been formed over pints at a shared table on the pub’s outdoor patio where office workers mingle with musicians and students. The pub’s reputation has even earned it celebrity visits by folks such as Cuba Gooding Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal.
