Moments of revelation happened to Catherine McMillan as she travelled the world, going from road to road by bike and foot. It was during her twenties and thirties that she journeyed to Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand with her husband. And she learned to see the world in new ways. “It was a question of ‘who am I if I take away everything that defines me, all the people that know me?’” she says. “I found it so empowering to listen to who I really was.”
She also saw a reflection of empowerment in much of the art that she saw during her travels. They affected her image of herself because “I always wanted to develop a style of painting portraits,” she says. It was an ambition that would take different forms throughout the coming years in her work as a caricature artist – and, is still in progress today as she paints from home for her company, Catherine McMillan Art.
