Before making the move to become a professional spinner, DJMary Mac could be found at her friends’ houses playing vinyl records and having fun. Originally a part-time job and hobby, Mary’s DJ career went full-time in 2012. “I became so busy with weddings and corporate parties that I decided to quit my day job and set off on my own,” she says. Mary’s skills have increased exponentially since she first dove into the industry.
"One of my first forays into the industry was a High Noon competition in Ottawa," she recalls. "It was a contest with 10 DJs and a big crowd. The DJ who performed the best set and received the most crowd votes won, and it turned out to be me!”
The DJ community may be competitive at times, but Mary notes that her peers are also a tight-knit and encouraging group. “My husband used to DJ,” Mary says. “Half of my friends are DJs; it’s a really supportive community in the way that we aren’t fighting or trying to one-up everyone else. I enjoy sharing and collaborating new ideas, techniques and technology with DJ friends.”
