My husband and I decided to try Saporito for dinner tonight, what a mistake. The owner, Jim, was plain rude from the moment we sat at our table. Jim asked us if we would like a drink, we were undecided at the time, and said that we would stick with water. After hearing that, he said to the two of us ' I bet you would like lemons with your free water'..my husband thought he was just kidding around, so we stayed. I ordered 'Veal' parmigiana, and my husband the Italian grill(Sausage, Chicken breast, and 'Veal' cutlet). When our dinners arrived I was in shock- the apparent roasted potato was rather a deep fried wedge, and the vegetables were frozen veggies(you could tell by the look of the carrots, the shaved imprints). How hard is it for restaurants these days to prepare fresh vegetables that are in season. I started to eat my 'Veal' dish, but it was tough and tasted more like pork, then beef. Veal is suppose to be tender and succulant, this was rather tough and dry, my husband agreed(he eats a lot more veal than I do). Jim, never checked our meal, or to see how we were doing once-by the time he did come around we had been sitting for awhile disgusted with our meals. We left the majority of our meals, and not once did Jim ask about why it was left. Jim never offered us dessert or coffee, we had to ask him. After clearing our table he told us what desserts he had and we ordered the Tarimasu. When he returned he told us he did not have any at the moment that he was sold out. My husband then asked for the check. After about 20 minutes of waiting for the bill, Jim came back reeking of cigarettes and flop the bill on our table-we told him that we had debit, he rolled his eyes and said we would have to come to the front to pay. My husband left a small amount for a tip(5.00) and that set JIm off. He told us to get out and that we were not welcomed here any more. I have never been treated this way by anyone before in the restaurant business. After reading the other reviews I can see it's not the first time someone has felt this way about him. Please don't step foot in this place, Jim will only ruin your evening.
After reading the reviews online about this restaurant I was apprehensive about going to a staff Xmas get-together involving 16 people. I don't know what other reviewers are talking about. The servers had excellent manners and the food was good (for the price) and was served in a timely manner. I didn't hear any complaints from anyone at our table. We were lucky to have a restaurant accomodate such a large group. The owner made a point of acknowledging the person who had made our reservation. Nice people, good food. I would go back.
We ate here last night with group of 8 and will not be back! The pricing here is ridiculous. $15.99 for spaghetti and meatballs that tasted like it came from a can. The noodles were watery and overcooked and not worth the money. $$24.99 for a seafood pasta and the shrimp comes with the tail on??? Not to mention the fact that it tasted rotten. POS system is from the 80's, they can't even split a bottle of wine on bills. 15% tip is added to the bill BEFORE taxes and the service deserves a 8% tip at best. We were the only table, 2 servers and we did not get one single water refill. STAY AWAY from this place if you are looking for a good meal/evening.
I would NEVER recommend this restaurant. The owner and manager, Jim, is the most arrogant person I have ever spoken to. I asked a question about my bill and he responded in such a rude, condescending manner which left my friends and I in a state of shock. I have never been spoken to in such an awful way, I left the restaurant literally in tears, even his staff were embarrassed! As for the food: It was poorly presented and was basically overpriced pasta and sauce from a jar. If you want a nice dining experience do not go here. Seriously, save your time and money and do not leave in tears like I did.
I have mixed feelings writing about Saporito because my family and friends have been very loyal to the restaurant for many years. In fact, I really feel that the restaurant survives largely because of the loyal "regulars". Being in this somewhat "privileged" category of regulars, I must say that unless you have built a relationship with the staff of the restaurant, you will likely find that the service is adequate, at best. You may even find the staff members rude and inattentive. It is unfortunate, but true. In terms of the food, the menu probably has never changed since the restaurant opened. There are specials offered everyday (generally fish) which tend to be a bit more adventurous, but they never really wow me. The menu is fairly predictable- chicken/ veal parmesan, lasagna, fettucine alfredo, etc. The create your own pastas result in dishes that I could easily replicate at home. It makes me wonder where the creativity is. I would love to see Saporito get a "makeover" in terms of its decor, the attitude of the staff, and the food. It would be great to see traditional Italian dishes added to the menu such as handmade gnocchi, caprese salad, and risotto- something to keep patrons interested. While I will return to Saporito mostly out of loyalty, I recognize- unfortunately- that it is obviously not the best place for Italian in the city.
