  • Congratulations to BC Renal's Executive Director Dr. Adeera Levin on receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal in honour of her innumerable contributions to people living with kidney disease in B.C., Canada and around the world. Nominated by The Kidney Foundation of Canada, she is one of 30,000 Canadians to receive this prestigious recognition. Dr. Levin joins a number of others across PHSA and the health care system who have received this honour. As a nephrologist and renal leader, Dr. Levin has dedicated her career to advancing patient-centred, best practice kidney care — from being the first Canadian to serve as president of the International Society of Nephrology to her prolific work as a kidney researcher with over 600 peer-reviewed publications. She has been commemorated with numerous past awards, including the ISN Jean Hamburger Award for contributions to research in 2024 and the Order of Canada in 2015. We echo the words shared in a congratulatory letter from the Provincial Health Services Authority Board and Executive Leadership Team: "We are particularly grateful for your outstanding commitment to kidney care and research in the province – BC Renal stands as a model of care for other services to emulate.”

    • Dr. Levin accepts a bouquet of flowers on stage.

  • Please read these words of wisdom from Manpreet Khaira, Chief Virtual Health Officer at PHSA, on the importance of language and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism. #NationalIndigenousLanguagesDay #NILD2025

    View profile for Manpreet Khaira

    Chief Virtual Health Officer

As today is Canadian Indigneous Language Day, I wanted to share my reflections on the power of language. As the daughter of South Asian Punjabi-speaking immigrants, the Punjabi language has always been an important way for my family to connect to our culture and traditions. Recently my dad passed and many of our relatives who came to pay their respects shared many wonderful stories about my father. If I didn’t speak Punjabi, I wouldn’t have had the privilege of learning these parts of my family’s history. As a racialized settler, language is part of my identity.    Today, National Indigenous Languages Day, I am particularly mindful of language as a source of interconnectedness in every aspect of knowing and being. It carries the wisdom passed down from ancestors, including the stories of resilience and the bonds of community. But despite its importance, First Nations, Inuit and Métis languages in Canada continue to be at risk.    I reflect on the intergenerational impacts of this on Indigenous People, which resulted in the loss of Indigenous language speakers, and how horrific it would be not to have a connection back to your family, your culture, or your traditional teachings through your language.    From childhood to my role now as of Chief Virtual Health Officer at PHSA, I see how access to language is a privilege— a privilege that has allowed me to easily navigate the health system, find services and get timely treatment for a health issue. Indigenous language speakers don’t have that privilege, which can prevent or limit access to care when it is needed.     By focusing on Indigenous Language Access in healthcare, PHSA’s Provincial Language Services team is taking an active role towards truth, reconciliation and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism. In collaboration with Tsilhqot’in, Dãkelh Dene, and Secwepemc Nations with Interior Health, we’re working with these First Nations on a pilot program to see how embedding local Indigenous languages could help improve cultural safety during health-care interactions.      This initiative is a small way that we are working with Indigenous Peoples to learn more about the impacts of language in the health-care system.
