Independent art galleries to visit in Edmonton

Whether you’re an avid collector or just an admirer of art, there are plenty of independent art galleries to browse through in Edmonton. Most of the city’s smaller art galleries are conveniently located on or near 124th Street, allowing for a lovely art walk whenever you’re in the heart of Edmonton’s arts district.

West End Gallery

Art lovers will find an abundance of contemporary Canadian artists at the West End Gallery. Established in 1975, they opened a second location in Victoria, B.C., in 1994. The impressive artwork they display includes sculptures, glass work, still life, high realism, figurative, abstract and landscape styles.

The gallery represents more than 40 artists, including revered Canadian painter David Janzen and photographer Brianna Hughes (both residents of Edmonton, no big deal). There’s a range of mediums, including drawings, sculpture, print making and photography on display at this lovely gallery.

This art gallery focuses on work from First Nations artists across Canada. This includes everything from Inuit soapstone sculptures to North West wood carvings. The work of well-known native artists, such as Norval Morrisseau, Alex Janvier, Roy Thomas, Daphne Odijg, Jane Ash Poitras, Jim Logan and Maxine Noel is showcased here regularly.

While the gallery shows mostly contemporary Canadian art, you will find a small sampling of American and international art, as well as Canadian historical art. They represent more established artists, such as Dorothy Knowles, Ann Kipling and Vic Cacansky, as well as up-and-coming artists, including Tim Okamura and Matthew Pillsbury.

This artist-run, not-for-profit art centre is where the cool kids go to look at art. It was founded in 1973 and moved into a new downtown space in 2013. The gallery celebrates contemporary visual art from local, national and international artists, including Edmonton painter Erin Elizabeth Ross. They also throw awesome patio parties in the summer.

This is the biggest commercial art gallery in the city, with art from Canadian and international artists in every contemporary medium – painting, sculpture, print making, photography, drawing and mixed media. They represent artists such as Jana Milne, Adele Knowler and Roger Colson.
