In a city with a proud craft beer tradition, Yaletown Brewing Company (YBC) is one of the originals. Founded in 1994, it’s the oldest brewpub in Vancouver, and has been a central figure in the transformation of Yaletown from dilapidated, warehouse district to toney downtown neighbourhood packed with shops and restaurants.
Given this legacy, the brewers at YBC could be excused for resting on their laurels. But brewery production manager Tariq Khan and brewmaster David Macanulty are accomplished brewers who take serious pride in their ales and lagers. Or, as David puts it, “It’s great when people who came in just to watch the hockey game end up talking about the beer.”
Happily, patrons can do both — in either the 160-seat restaurant with a sprawling patio that lines one of Yaletown’s liveliest intersections, or in the smaller pub side, that looks directly into the brewery. Both spaces represent quintessential Yaletown — which is to say stylish and modern, but with a heavy imprint of the past, thanks to red brick walls and massive wood beams throughout.
