We have had occasion to visit this Mandarin restaurant on numerous trips to Hamilton and we have never been disappointed. We recommend this buffet to anyone who likes a good variety.
Made reservations mother's birthday celebration for lunch & requested a quiet surroundings & requested the servers to sing the birthday song and give her a cake. I was told that was not a problem. The seating we recieved was pushed into a group of 2 large long tables, that were set up to seat a Very Large Graduating Catholic School of approx. 40 students, parents and faculty. My family wase constantly pushed & bumped into by every student and server who attended this group function that we were inconviently shoved beside and forced to sit beside, as well, while this unruley group of children kept running back and forth up to the Buffet tables they were also banging our elbows, chairs and table as they passed. We constantly tried to get any of the server's attention, so we could get our water glasses refilled and / or plates removed, unless we repeatedly kept asking for water and napkins, as they were too focused on the gratuity from this group to bother serving our table. Finally one server did fill my mothers glass with water, but when she poured it from the side of the water pitcher into my mothers glass, she poured some of the water onto my mother's lap also, then smiled and just said sorry.. BUT Never went to get napkins or a cloth for her to dry herself off. However with all the napkins and water glasses being refilled at the graduation tables, we were left out getting ANY proper service from ANY staff as we figured they were not focused on any gratuity they would have received from our table, but more from a large group at these tables. Most items WERE enjoyable, but there were many buffet items that tasted too salty. When it came time to pay the bill, I told 3 servers privately, my mom is ready, when they will sing Happy Birthday to my 76 year old Mother? I was told "OK" . " They'll check" and "Soon". 15 minutes later I recieved my bill, for "total amount, handed a warm towel and a fortune cookie. No cake for my mother, and NO Birthday Song. No Apologies. NOTHING MORE! Then, Only then, did a server actually wait around at our table, until I fully paid the bill in cash, and as she took the money away, counted it out to see what her tip was, without asking if I'd like change back. No Cake or song, and It was very rude of the server to dump water onto my mother and not even get a napkin for her to dry off her pants. We were very disappointed at the service of the Upper James Street, Hamilton Mountain Mandarin Resturaunt so much I had to complian to the Head office. When I did complain to the Mandarin Head office, and upon thier full investigation into what happened when we booked this famil Birthday, we were offered 3 complimentary lunch bufffet back at Hamilton Mandarin to replace the 3 paid buffets we didnt enjoy. My family and I are very appreaciative of this, and feel the Mandarin buffet restauraunt has done someting to try to fix thier error from the past visit we experianced. We do recommend The Mandarin Buffet to everyone!!
A big letdown from the year before. Spare chairs were stacked around the outer edge of the buffet (WHY?), unsupervised kids were running around and food was hastily prepared and not up to scratch. We "reserved" 3 weeks before and were placed in an entrance hallway to one of the large rooms. On asking if any other tables were available, our waiter said, "What do you expect on New Years Eve?" I expect better. Do it right or don't bother. My glowing review from last year can be disregarded. I'll make other plans for next year.
